K – 2nd | Building Strong Foundations

The early elementary years establish the academic skills and learning habits students will build on throughout their education. Through structured, teacher-led instruction, students develop strong foundations in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, history, and Bible while growing in confidence and independence.

Reading & Phonics

Students build strong reading skills through systematic phonics instruction, beginning with letter sounds, blends, and word formation and progressing toward increasingly fluent and confident reading. Reading groups provide opportunities for guided practice, while vocabulary, comprehension, and oral reading help students learn to understand and discuss what they read.

Writing & Language Arts

Writing develops alongside reading as students learn correct letter formation, spelling, capitalization, grammar, and sentence structure. Cursive writing begins in kindergarten at Park Ridge and continues to develop through the early grades. Students progress from foundational handwriting and simple sentences to increasingly independent written expression and creative writing.

Mathematics

Students develop a strong foundation in arithmetic through regular instruction, practice, and mastery of essential math facts. Early number concepts progress into place value, addition and subtraction, money, time, measurement, fractions, and introductory multiplication and division. Daily practice and speed drills help build accuracy and fluency, while word problems strengthen mathematical reasoning and application.

Science & Health

Young students explore the world around them through science taught from a biblical worldview. Topics develop an understanding of areas such as plants, animals, the human body, weather, matter, energy, and space. Observation, discussion, and hands-on learning encourage curiosity while helping students begin developing scientific thinking skills.

History & Geography

Students are introduced to American history and geography through age-appropriate stories, people, places, and events. They begin developing map and geography skills while learning about America's heritage, important historical figures, national symbols, holidays, and traditions.

Bible & Christian Growth

Biblical truth is woven throughout the Park Ridge experience. Students receive daily Bible instruction, learn and memorize Scripture, and study biblical people and events while developing an understanding of Christian character and biblical principles. Weekly praise and worship and a Christian worldview throughout the curriculum reinforce the connection between faith, learning, and everyday life.

Small class sizes allow teachers to know their students well and provide individual attention during these important foundational years. Reading groups, regular academic progress monitoring, and free after-school tutoring when needed provide additional support. Students also benefit from physical education, music, and art as part of a well-rounded early elementary experience.

3rd – 5th | Growing Knowledge & Independence

As students move through the upper elementary years, they build on strong academic foundations while taking greater responsibility for their learning. Reading, writing, mathematics, science, and history become increasingly challenging as students strengthen comprehension, reasoning, communication, study habits, and independent work skills.

Reading & Literature

Students move beyond learning to read toward reading with deeper understanding. Through increasingly challenging literature, students strengthen fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and critical-thinking skills while learning to identify main ideas, sequence, cause and effect, character development, and other literary concepts. Class reading and discussion encourage students to think carefully about what they read and communicate their understanding clearly.

Writing & Language Arts

Grammar, spelling, vocabulary, penmanship, and composition work together to strengthen written communication. Students develop increasingly organized paragraphs and compositions while continuing creative writing and learning to express ideas with greater clarity and detail. As students progress toward 5th grade, writing expands to include more structured assignments that prepare them for essays, summaries, research, and literary analysis in the middle school years.

Mathematics

Students strengthen computational fluency while developing increasingly advanced problem-solving and reasoning skills. Instruction builds from mastery of whole-number operations into concepts such as fractions, decimals, measurement, geometry, and other increasingly complex applications. By 5th grade, students work with concepts including fractions, decimals, proportions, and percents as they prepare for more advanced mathematics.

Science & Health

Science and health instruction expands students' understanding of God's creation through increasingly detailed study of the natural and physical world, the human body, and healthy living. Students strengthen observation, reasoning, and scientific-thinking skills while gaining experience with the scientific method and hands-on learning.

History & Geography

Students deepen their understanding of American history while strengthening geography and map-reading skills. Historical people, events, places, and ideas are studied with increasing depth as students learn to understand relationships between events and their significance. In 4th grade, Park Ridge students complete the NC State Notebook, providing a focused study of North Carolina alongside their broader history and geography instruction.

Bible & Christian Growth

Daily Bible instruction continues to help students build biblical knowledge while applying Scripture and Christian principles to everyday life. Scripture study and memorization, biblical character studies, and weekly praise and worship help students grow in their understanding of faith, character, responsibility, and their relationship with God. Biblical truth remains integrated throughout the academic program.

Free after-school tutoring remains available with the student's teacher. Students also participate in physical education, national achievement testing, and age-appropriate enrichment, with computer instruction beginning in 4th grade, including Microsoft programs and an introduction to MLA formatting.

6th – 8th | Preparing for High School

The middle school years are designed to prepare students for the academic expectations and personal responsibility of high school. Students encounter increasingly challenging coursework while developing stronger critical-thinking, research, writing, problem-solving, study, and independent-learning skills.

Reading & Literature

Students read increasingly challenging literature while strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, interpretation, and critical-thinking skills. Class reading and discussion encourage students to examine ideas, identify themes, analyze characters and events, distinguish fact from opinion, and support their understanding with evidence from what they read.

Writing & Language Arts

Grammar, spelling, vocabulary, composition, and written communication become increasingly advanced throughout the middle school years. Students complete essays, summaries, character sketches, literary analysis, current-events writing, and research-based assignments while learning to organize ideas clearly and support them with appropriate detail. Research and writing instruction also develops skills in MLA formatting and prepares students for the expectations of high school coursework.

Mathematics

Middle school mathematics strengthens computational fluency while moving students into increasingly advanced concepts and problem solving. Students work with fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percents, equations, geometry, and other foundational algebraic concepts as they prepare for high-school mathematics. At Park Ridge, students progress into Pre-Algebra in 7th grade and Algebra in 8th grade.

Science & Health

Science instruction becomes more analytical as students study increasingly complex topics in life, earth, space, and physical science. Students strengthen observation, scientific reasoning, and application of the scientific method while participating in laboratory and hands-on learning experiences. Health instruction continues to develop an understanding of the human body and responsible stewardship of personal health.

History & Geography

Students expand their understanding of U.S., Old World, and World History while strengthening geography, map-reading, civics, and historical reasoning. Instruction moves beyond learning names and dates toward understanding relationships among people, events, ideas, governments, and cultures. Students are encouraged to examine history through a biblical worldview while developing a stronger understanding of America's heritage and the wider world.

Bible & Christian Growth
